It’s funny how I have been a NFL fan all my life but recently I have been researching the story behind the origin of their name. I was fascinated by the stories and made me love NFL football even more. Every NFL has a story behind its name. While the origin of some names is clear, others are more stratified or unclear. This is my favorite fairy tale.
Chicago Bears – In 1921, Decatur Staleys moved to Chicago, Illinois. Chicago already has a baseball team named its son. So owner George Halas chose “Bear” instead, because football is a much rougher sport than baseball.
Cleveland Browns
A man named Paul Brown served as Browns’ first head coach and general manager. The original Browns team then moved to Baltimore (1996), becoming the Baltimore Ravens. Three years later, the Cleveland Browns emerged as an NFL expansion team.
Indianapolis Colts
Miami Seahawks moved to Baltimore, Maryland, in 1946. A man named Charles Evans won a team-name contest, choosing the name “Colts.” Maryland is best known for its racehorses, so why did Evans choose the term to refer to colt? The argument is that the Baltimore football team will be the youngest team in the league. Furthermore, he noted that “Colts” was easy to say and was included in the headlines of newspapers. When the team moved to Indianapolis in 1984, it kept a name.
Atlanta Falcons
The city of Atlanta, Georgia is not famous for its eagles. So, how were the teams named after the majestic bird? A teacher named Julia Elliot wins a team-name contest for the new NFL team. Elliot noted that various adjectives accurately describe the eagle: Courage, Deadly, Dignified, Proud and Sport. Thus, the new Atlanta NFL team became the Falcons.
Green Bay Packers
The story behind the Packers name is certainly one of the most compelling in the NFL. George Calhoun and Earl “Curly” Lambeau once spoke in passing about forming a new football team. In no time, the idea became a reality. The employer of Lambeau, India Packaging Company, agrees to sponsor the team. They provide jerseys, soccer equipment and training grounds. Due to the company’s contribution to launching the team, the name “Packers” was born.
Tennessee Titans
The Titans are characters in ancient Greek mythology, so how did they become associated with the NFL football team? After the team moved from Houston to Tennessee, the owners announced that the team would have a new nickname. He revealed that the “Titans” were chosen because the Tennessee city of Nashville was nicknamed “South Athens.” During the 5th century B.C., Athens became the main city of ancient Greece.
No matter what NFL football team you are rooting for, it is always nice to know the origin of the team name and can give you a better appreciation for the team. Now the question is which name will win this NFL season and will call the super bowl champion? Let’s all hang in there while the NFL reveals to us.
